It's a dangerous place to be for both dogs and people. Dogfighting is heavily linked to gambling, drugs, guns, prostitution and gangs. Children exposed to dogfights are desensitized to cruelty and violence for life. Recognizing the link between dogfighting and other crimes, The National Sheriff's Association, in July, 2005, joined 345 other state law officials in endorsing the Animal Fighting Prohibition Enforcement Act. The American Veterinary Medical Association and The National Chicken Council also endorse this legislation. BEWARE! There are reports in Shelby County of people who steal both city pets and country pets to use as "bait" when training dogs to fight. Grown dogs may have their teeth filed before being used. So keep an eye on trucks with cages in the back that seems to be interested in your pets or "cruising" your property. Also think twice about a stranger who responds to an ad for free kittens or puppies and offers to take several or all of your litter. These puppies and kittens, along with stolen pets, are then sold cheaply to the dog trainers. It isn't a good ending. Report your suspicions and evidence to the Shelby County Sheriff's Office or your local law authority. |
